Open-calls for the year 2022/23


Comprising of The Artistic Research Grant, The Curatorial and Artistic Developmental Exhibition programs, The Residency, and the Internship and Mentorship Programs, all designed to support emerging practitioners in the MENASA region. 

The open calls fall under the Capacity-Building Programs, which continue to evolve from insights identified through focus groups and studying the response to Warehouse421’s general public programs. The programs invite creative practitioners and professionals from within  the Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia regions and who demonstrate a commitment to their chosen creative field.

Warehouse421 is inviting talent based in the UAE and the MENASA region to submit existing products through our 2022 Open Call for a chance to be a part of our unique shop, Dukkan421; a dynamic design platform supporting creative and regionally-relevant products and design research. We encourage all types of creative practitioners to apply, from craftspeople to independent publishers, product designers to jewelry makers.

 

Dukkan421 is a store inspired by the architecture themes of Warehouse421 and Mina Zayed. Our store features design products that reflect Warehouse421's commitment to fostering local and regional talent, offering exclusive limited editions, a wide selection of publications, stationary and unique products.

 

"Regionally Logical" is part of Warehouse421's mission to cultivate appreciation for the culture and design of the region. We hope to nurture this appreciation through the curation of tangible representations and explorations of the rich craftsmanship and artisanal practices in our region.

Curatorial Development Exhibition Program: Screening Screaming: (Human)Nature in Crisis

Screening Screaming: (Human)Nature in Crisis
Warehouse421 and the Bombay Institute for Critical Analysis and Research (BICAR) invite curators from the MENASA region to propose a group exhibition, public program, or publication on the theme: ‘Screening Screaming: (Human)Nature in Crisis’.


The program will think critically about the Anthropocene and its presence in contemporary art, thought, and philosophy. Man-made ecological crisis has taken center stage in art today, depicting injustice not only between humans, but increasingly across species. At the same time, in philosophy, new realities emerge around the clock, premised on there being a Great Outdoors, a nature-in-itself independent of human beings. On these views, the universe should be a democracy of objects that includes inanimate and animate nature, human and nonhuman. But humans have failed to decolonize their relation to nature: they continue to impinge upon, crowd out, and destroy the earth in an apocalyptic present.

Artistic Research Grant

Projects will start in summer 2022

 

The grant is open to emerging artists within the Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia regions, and supports practice-based research investigating new social questions through interdisciplinary methodologies. Creative practitioners can work through disciplines including but not limited to visual art and curations, design and technology, literary arts, culinary arts, music, theater, and performance. Warehouse421 will award the grantees a budget up to AED75,000 ($20,380) to support their research and project.

Artistic Development Exhibition Program

Program will start in June 2022

 

 In collaboration with The Institute for Emerging Art, Warehouse421 launches its Artistic Developmental program, an exhibition process that emphasizes the professional and creative development of participating creative practitioners. The program is open to UAE-based early-mid career creative practitioners and successful applicants will be awarded with a AED10,000 participation fee. The realization and production of their projects will be exhibited at Warehouse421 in 2022.

Internship and Mentorship Program

Internship will start in January 2023 & July 2023 

The Warehouse421 Internship and Mentorship Program offers early career development support and professional preparation opportunities for emerging-creative professionals from diverse backgrounds. The program supports the professional development of young practitioners through hands-on experience and training that paves the way for future career opportunities. The program takes place on-site, and offers selected participants the opportunity to be immersed in a cultural center's operations across various departments with a targeted focus on a specific field. Depending on the selected area of focus as well as Warehouse421’s needs, interns would work with the Head of Warehouse421, Programs Manager, Education Manager, Exhibitions Manager Communications Manager or Operations Manager.

The internship runs for six months,  from January to June 2023 and from July to December 2023.

Docents Program

Docents will start in September 2022

The Warehouse421 Docents Program is targeted for alumnae/alumni students. Warehouse421 Docents are the trained volunteers who will be providing educational services for Warehouse421 visitors. The program will provide training sessions for participants to ensure volunteers are equipped and able to use their communication skills to engage with visitors. As our mandate highlights inclusivity of space, the training will also include specialists in the field to learn how to deal with People of Determination, Audience Relations Training, and Exhibition Related Training.
