Abu Dhabi, UAE, 30 October 2018 – Warehouse421, Abu Dhabi’s vibrant creative and cultural hub, has unveiled details of its November programming. Next month, visitors will have the opportunity to explore exhibitions encompassing graphic design and photography, experience performance art and a video installation produced in collaboration with Abu Dhabi Art, enjoy film screenings from Cinema Akil, and hone in on creative skills in a variety of workshops.
Faisal Al Hassan, Manager of Warehouse421, said “We are pleased to welcome two new exhibitions to our space, together with Abu Dhabi Art’s Durub Al Tawaya performing arts program and the return of Cinema Akil. We look forward to another exciting month ahead!”
100/100 Hundred Best Arabic Posters Exhibition
100/100 Hundred Best Arabic Posters exhibition gathers the winning entries from a biennial competition that celebrates the work of talented graphic designers from across the Arab world. Every two years, the best entries are selected by a panel of experts and are rewarded with inclusion in a traveling exhibition. Participating Emirati artists include Alia and Maitha Demithan, Aisha Al Muhairi, and Mobius Design Studio. The first stop for this traveling exhibition will be in Abu Dhabi, at Warehouse421 where this year’s winning posters will be on display from 16 November 2018 to 20 January 2019.
Odysseus Exhibition
Warehouse421 welcomes Odysseus, a photography exhibition by New York University Abu Dhabi Professor Tarek Al-Ghoussein. Al-Ghoussein's work explores the boundaries between landscape photography, self-portraiture and performance art. Through his latest series, Al-Ghoussein carries out a comprehensive artistic study of the islands off the coasts of Abu Dhabi, documenting and interacting with found natural habitats and built environments. Odysseus opens on 16 November and will run until 30 November.
Abu Dhabi Art: Durub Al Tawaya
Warehouse421 partners with Abu Dhabi Art in this year’s Durub Al Tawaya, an annual performing arts program that extends over three months across various venues throughout the city.
Warehouse421 will be screening Diver, an immersive video installation by Monira Al Qadiri commissioned for the Durub Al Tawaya VI program in collaboration with Warehouse421 and Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art (Australia). The piece addresses the disconnect between the realities and the romanticized modern-day view of pearl diving in the Arabian Gulf, highlighting the massive transformations that occurred following the discovery of oil. Diver will be shown daily at Warehouse421 from 16 November.
Visitors can embark on a remarkable boat ride with performance artist Anna Rispoli, as she invites her audience to experience Five Attempts to Speak to an Alien. Commissioned by Durub Al Tawaya IV, this participatory public performance is part of the Abu Dhabi Art Collection of Performances. Rispoli encourages people to imagine the city from a distance, in order to explore possibilities to develop fresh connections and new commitments to the future. Five Attempts to Speak to an Alien will take place on Saturday 10 November and Saturday 17 November, from 5:30pm to 7:00pm. The boat will depart from Al Dhafra Restaurant in Mina Zayed.
Herstory: Film and the Arab Woman
Cinema Akil returns to Warehouse421 for its sixth season with the launch of Herstory: Film and the Arab Woman, a season dedicated exclusively to contemporary films made by, and about, Arab women. This inspiring series will run from November 2018 to April 2019, and kicks off on Wednesday 28 November with screenings of Manal Bin Amro’s ‘Smell of Bread’, and ‘17’, directed by Widad Shafakoj Jordan.
Workshops
In addition to these exhibitions and experiences, visitors to Warehouse421 can participate in a selection of hands-on workshops. These include an Introduction to Photography in collaboration with Gulf Photo Plus; a session exploring Tatreez, the art of Palestinian embroidery; and a two-day workshop titled Visual Identity Paradox, designed in conjunction with 100/100 Hundred Best Arabic Posters. Participants from all backgrounds are welcome to join, from absolute beginners to advanced practitioners.
